Fun Ideas to Shake Up Your Cardmaking!
One of the joys of cardmaking is the freedom to play and experiment! In this post, I’m sharing four handmade cards, each with a twist—unexpected techniques or ideas that push your creativity a little further. Whether you’re changing the shape of your card, playing with bold color combos, or adding texture and movement, these twists are sure to inspire your next crafting session. Let’s take a look!
Card 1: Square Card with a Fluttering Twist
Sometimes changing the shape of your card can completely change its feel. This square card feels elegant and perfectly balanced—and it’s the perfect canvas for bold design!
Twist: A non-traditional square card base.
Altenew Supplies Used:
- Butterfly Dreams Stamp & Die Set
- Altenew Glitter Cardstock
- Inks: Coral Bliss, Pinkalicious, Razzleberry, Pale Mauve, Pink Diamond, Vineyard Berry
Design Tips:
I created a glittery birdcage to add shimmer and used ink watercoloring on the butterflies for depth. Stamping and die-cutting two butterflies allowed me to create a lovely sense of motion across the card. The square shape gives everything a crisp, modern frame.
Card 2: Unexpected Color Combo – Orange & Pink
This card proves that sometimes the most surprising color combinations create the most eye-catching results. Orange and pink might not be your first instinct, but together they sing!
Twist: Bold and unexpected color combo—orange + pink.
Altenew Supplies Used:
- Time to Celebrate Stamp Set
- Inks: Orange Cream, Pastel Sunrise, Pink Diamond
Design Tips:
I kept the design fairly clean to let the colors take center stage. The orange and pink work beautifully together. A bold sentiment finishes it off with just the right pop.
Card 3: Embossed Background Magic
Texture adds so much to a card! For this twist, I used heat embossing to create a bold background and layered ink blending on top for extra drama.
Twist: Embossed background technique.
Altenew Supplies Used:
- Mini Delights: Strength Stamp Set
- Embossing Ink
- Inks: Ultramarine, Ultraviolet
Design Tips:
I started by stamping the background with embossing ink and heat-setting it with white powder. Then, I blended Ultramarine and Ultraviolet over the embossed areas, creating a resist effect that lets the pattern shine through. The result is rich, vibrant texture with a professional polish.
Card 4: Shaker Card Fun
Who doesn’t love an interactive card? This shaker card is full of fun and floral beauty, with soft purples and greens framing the movement inside.
Twist: Shaker card element.
Altenew Supplies Used:
- Dazzling Flowers Cineraria Stamp & Die Set
- Inks: Forest Green, Deep Iris, Lavender Fields
Design Tips:
I created a die-cut window using the coordinating die and backed it with acetate to form the shaker. Inside, I filled it with coordinating glitter for a soft, shimmering look. The stamped florals inside the card brings the design together with gentle elegance.
Final Thoughts:
Adding a twist to your cardmaking doesn’t have to be complicated! A new shape, a daring color choice, texture, or interactive element can completely transform your design. Try one of these ideas in your next card project—and don’t be afraid to experiment. That’s where the magic happens!
